about flatiron forge

Hi, I'm Megan Mix, and I'd love to help your horses enjoy their best lives.

A lifelong horse lover, I knew early on that working with horses is my life's calling. From a young age, I watched farriers work on horses and became fascinated with this unique trade. As an undergrad, I shadowed local farriers who allowed me to watch, learn, and even help from time to time. I was hooked!

Upon graduation from Cornell University's Farrier Program, I launched Flatiron Forge for all your equine hoof needs. I look forward to serving you and your horses.

Cornell University Farrier Program Graduate

I studied under master farrier Steve Kraus, CJF, at the Cornell University Farrier Program, where I focused on trimming skills and therapeutic and performance horse shoeing, and graduated in 2023.

Competitive Equestrian & Riding Instructor

I enjoyed riding on competitive IEA and IHSA teams throughout my youth and college years, and have spent many hours training and showing my own horses. For years, I ran a well-attended lesson program for beginning riders.

What People Say

"Megan at Flatiron Forge provides excellent hoof care and customer service! I have a gaited Tennessee Walker Arab cross who grows a lot of hoof, and requires frequent trims to avoid tripping over long toes. Megan keeps his hooves in excellent condition, and provides information and education on hoof and horse care. Highly recommend!"

"Megan has been trimming our two "Barefoot" horses' feet pretty much since she graduated from Farrier School at Cornell University. She is an excellent horse woman. Our horses are not the easiest, but Megan takes it in stride and understands their unique personalities. She has been able to diagnose hoof issues and work with us in keeping their hooves in good health. Megan is a nice person to boot, which is a breath of fresh air in the world today! Megan always works with our schedule and comes when it works for us both. 5 STARS!

Kim & Bill Case

"One of our horses sustained a severe coffin bone fracture which we thought would never heal... Megan worked closely with our veterinarian to create a treatment plan with therapeutic shoes and miraculously our horse is now on the road to recovery."
